An inexpensive yet comprehensive personal weather station to monitor basic outside weather conditions (temperature, wind speed and direction, and rainfall (optional)) as well as inside temperature.
Features & Construction
Compact LCD and keypad give easy access to functions for inside temperature, outside temperature, wind speed and direction, wind chill, time, rainfall, and alarms. Wind is displayed digitally and on a 16 point compass rose; all other functions digitally. Comes with external temperature sensor and 25 feet of cable, anemometer/wind vane with 40 feet of cable, junction box to connect sensors to the Wizard, 8 feet of junction box cable, and an AC adapter. The rain collector is an option. The Wizard records highs and lows for inside and outside temperature, the low for wind chill, and the high for wind speed. The alarms are for the same parameters, and there is also a regular time alarm and a scan function. Displays in English or metric units.
Use & Operation
The anemometer is mounted in an appropriate place away from obstructions, usually on a pole or roof, and the temperature sensor is mounted under an eave or in a weather shelter out of direct sunlight. The optional rain collector can be mounted on a roof or out in the open, away from any structural interference. The sensor cables can be extended with the optional 40 foot long extensions, which have weatherproof connections, and are plugged into the junction box, which is located indoors or in an area protected from the elements. The junction box cable is then run from the junction box to the Wizard, which is powered by an AC adapter. The wind vane is adjusted by using a compass to orient it in the proper direction, and the time & date, units of measure, and alarms are set using the keypad. The Wizard is now functional and ready to monitor, and with the optional Weatherlink data module and software can also store weather data and display it on a PC or Macintosh computer.
Additional Information
The Wizard is powered by a 120V AC to 12V DC adapter but may be powered remotely from a vehicle by the lighter adapter cord or any other 9-12 volt power source which does not exceed 200 milliamps (minimum 20 ma); some motorcycle batteries may work. It has a 9 volt backup battery which will power it for 3 days; 1.5 days if used with the Weatherlink. The sensor cables can be extended up to 160 feet before signal degradation becomes a problem. The connections are weatherproof but should not be buried in the soil. It is often easier to extend the junction box cable instead of 2 or 3 sensor cables. The Weather Monitor II must be used if barometric pressure or humidity are desired to be monitored.
