FISHER TW-6 Pipe and Cable Locator

Document Number: 1378

What it does:

All pipe and cable locators are some arrangement of a "two box" system which use a transmitter and a receiver to locate or trace metal objects. The TW-6 can be used as a "metal detector" for locating metallic objects, as an inductive pipe and cable tracer, or as a conductive (direct connection) tracer to isolate a single wire or pipe.

Applications:

The TW-6 has many uses, especially by water departments, telephone companies, electric power companies, gas companies, petroleum pipeline companies, and others who need to know where to dig (and where not to!). Traditional uses include finding underground pipes, cables, manhole covers, vaults and valve boxes. Using conductive tracing, a wire, cable, or pipe can be isolated from nearby lines to avoid confusion during tracing. Conductive tracing also increases line tracing performance by 25-50% over the inductive method.

Features:

  • One unit for inductive locating, inductive tracing, or conductive tracing.
  • Noise canceling circuitry to eliminate power line interference.
  • VCO sound circuitry increases signal range in the presence of metal.
  • Transmitter and receiver can be detached from handle for flexibility during operation.
  • Powered by standard AA batteries (included).
  • Audio peaks over object for precise locating.

Operation:

For inductive locating, the receiver and transmitter are connected at opposite ends of the handle. This configuration is just like a metal detector in that a signal is being transmitted, and if a metal object is nearby the signal field becomes unbalanced and registers on the meter and with an audio tone.

Inductive tracing is a one person job for tracing underground service when a starting point for the line is known. The transmitter is placed over the line and left at that location, and the receiver is carried away, traveling along the path of greatest signal.

Conductive tracing is used by a direct electrical connection to the transmitter with an alligator clip. This concentrates a signal onto the line or pipe and reduces confusion when tracing around other metallic objects. A plumber's snake can be used to trace nonmetallic cables.
