FISHER FX-3 Magnetic Locator

Document Number: 1376

Applications:

Magnetic locators use existing magnetic fields to locate objects. For this reason, magnetic locators will only detect iron and steel objects, unlike a metal detector which can sense all types of metal. The advantage is that a magnetic locator is more sensitive than a metal detector so it can detect deeper objects. Magnetic locators are commonly used by utility crews, surveyors, and construction workers to locate objects such as manhole covers, survey pins, valve boxes, and gas pipes.

Features:

  • Simple one knob operation
  • Waterproof sensor probe
  • Low cost and low maintenance
  • Automatic battery check
  • Hard carrying case included
  • 5 year manufacturer's warranty

Operation:

The sensor tube uses two sensor coil assemblies which detect magnetic lines of force. When no magnetic objects are nearby, the Earth's magnetic field is detected equally by both sensors and a low steady tone is emitted. The FX-3 is unique in that it is a "motion" detector. It will respond only when the probe (or the target) is moving. As the sensor tube nears a ferrous metal object (iron or steel), the angle of the magnetic field lines upon each sensor is different and the tone from the speaker begins to rise in frequency until it nulls when the sensor is over the object. Non-ferrous metals such as brass, copper or aluminum will not be detected with any magnetic locator. Energized underground power lines can be detected as the electric current creates its own magnetic field. Energized power lines can be detected up to 12 feet deep even though the cable is made of aluminum or copper. FX-3 is compatible with headphones for use in high noise environments or when the speaker noise is not desired.

Locating depth will vary with the size and orientation of the object and the ability of the operator to interpret the signals. Snow, ice, water, wood, plastic, concrete, or soil do not affect the locator's ability to detect iron or steel. In fact, the unit can be used in water as long as main case at the top is not submerged.
