In this Issue: Avoiding Skin Cancer
Summer Prep
You don't need to be reminded that summer is almost here. For most Outdoor Pros warmer temperatures mean you'll be working non-stop over the next few months. The heat also brings with it potentially dangerous field conditions that require your attention and preparation.
Ben Meadows has the gear you need to sidestep the potential hazards of summer weather. Now's the time to stock up on items like hydration packs, insect repellents and protective apparel.
These small measures may seem trivial but (if you'll pardon the cliché) an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This is particularly true when it comes to sun block.
A member of our Ben Team recently had a frightening encounter with skin cancer. Gladly this scare had a positive outcome, but it brought home the importance of protecting your crew (and yourself) from the elements. That's why this issue of The Natural Resource features an article about skin cancer awareness and the potentially lethal consequences of working outdoors without proper protection.
Get ready for summer now. When you do, we're sure this season will not only be safe, but one of your most productive!

Skin Cancer Awareness for Outdoor Pros
May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. During this time of year, the Skin Cancer Foundation promotes events that educate the public about skin cancer and the means to prevent it. According to the foundation skin cancer is the most common form of cancer found in humans. The number of skin cancer cases is increasing every year to now epidemic levels. Professionals estimate that almost half of all Americans who live to be 65 or older will develop skin cancer at least once in their lifetimes.
We've gathered a few basic answers to some common questions about skin cancer. These are presented as guidelines and are not a substitute for your best source of information about the health of your skin—your doctor.
How can I tell if I have skin cancer?
The common signs are a change in the appearance of the skin, a new growth or a sore that won’t heal. Other warning signs follow the ABCDEs of a common type of skin cancer called melanoma. They are: Asymmetry - moles with halves that do not match. Border - typically uneven. Color - a variety of browns, tans, blacks and even red and blue. Diameter - usually larger than the size of a pencil eraser. Evolving, any change in size, shape or new symptoms like bleeding or itching can mean cancer. Contact your doctor if you notice these changes in your skin particularly if they last for more than two weeks.
What are the four main risk factors for skin cancer?
The first risk factor is exposure to the sun. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun is the main reason people get skin cancer. Areas of the world that have the highest rates of skin cancer are located closest to the equator. This is because the UV radiation is the strongest near the equator. Age is the second risk factor. Most skin cancers appear after the age of 50, but a lot of the damage occurs earlier in life. This is why it is important to start protecting right away when you are young. Exposure to UV radiation, for example in tanning beds, is the third risk factor. You still need to wear protection when you are in a tanning bed. The fourth most prevalent risk factor is therapeutic radiation. This is generally given when treating other types of cancer.
How can I prevent skin cancer?
As summer approaches and you spend more time in the field we hope that you'll maintain a rigorous skin cancer prevention program. Spread the word and lead by example to help keep yourself and everyone you work with cancer free.
