Clothes Make the Outdoor Pro?

The actual quote, from Mark Twain goes, Clothes make the man. Naked people have little or no influence on society.

There's not a lot we want to say about the impact naked people may or may not have on our daily lives. A more comfortable topic is the fact that clothes have very little to do with the true measure of an Outdoor Pro. But there are possible exceptions and most notable among them is the vest.

The vest is the Ben Meadows 10-Pocket Field variety that we've been selling for over 30 years. Not surprisingly, it was designed by Ben Meadows himself. After all, Ben wasn't the kind of guy who waited for someone else to solve a problem. He did it himself and one of his most enduring solutions is the 10-Pocket Field Vest.

His vest has become an object of devotion for people all over the world. If you're an Outdoor Pro it's probably one of the first pieces of field equipment you purchased. And over the years you've heard more than one anecdote about how this simple tool is more than just a collection of pockets. It's a useful partner that, right from the start, knows how you work and what you need.

We know it's not fair to gush about this vest without somehow paying tribute to it. That's why we've lowered the online price by 15% until May 17, 2010. That means you can pay less to get yourself a new color, maybe a back up vest or two and even outfit your entire crew with this legendary product.

So the question remains; do clothes make the Outdoor Pro? In the case of The Vest—it just might.

Mountain Pine Beetle Continues to Plague the Western U.S.

Mountain Pine Beetle Image Courtesy USDA Forest ServiceAccording to the U.S. Forest Service, in 2007 the Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB) was responsible for killing 3.9 million acres of trees in Colorado, Montana, Wyoming, Oregon, Idaho, Utah and Washington. The worst damage recorded by this insect was in 1981 when the beetle destroyed 4.7 million acres. Many experts were hopeful that the winter of 2008 was severe enough to greatly reduce the size of the MPB population. However the beetle continues to ravage large areas of the West.

The MPB is native to western North America. The exoskeleton is hard and black measuring approximately five millimeters. Common species of trees that are attacked by MPB include ponderosa and lodgepole pine. The image below* (taken in 2000) reveals portions of MPB blight to ponderosa pines in the Dixie National Forest, located in Utah.

The MPB kills pines by carving galleries in the phloem layer of the tree. The phloem is the tissue within the tree that carries the nutrients from the needles to the roots. The galleries block the nutrients produced by the needles from reaching the roots of the tree. The MPB also carries fungi. The fungus grows in the phloem as well as the sapwood interrupting the flow of water in the tree. By reducing the amount of water flowing in the tree, less pitch is produced. Pitch is the tree’s number one defense for fighting off the MPB and other invaders.

Experts from the U.S. Forest Service predict that if the MPB continues to destroy trees at its current rate mature lodge pole pine forests will disappear within three to five years. Legislation has been passed in Colorado to help fund the Forest Service's efforts to fight the damage caused by the MPB in the Rocky Mountain Region of the U.S.
