The Best of Both Worlds
Natural resource pros, like you, are often called on to be a top notch teacher, business person, facilitator, coach or perhaps a combination of all of the above. Your job demands that you wear many hats and that you move seamlessly from one role to another.
The contrasts can be stark. You know the skills you use when you're presenting at a conference poster session have little to do with the skills you used to actually gather the data for the presentation. But they're both equally important. Like when you're meeting with the public about a boundary issue, your people skills suddenly are just as crucial to your success as your technical expertise.
Your adaptability is reminiscent of a new GPS from Garmin. The nüvi 500 is just as comfortable sitting on the dashboard of a luxury car as it is helping you find your way out of a heavily wooded job site. In fact, in this issue you'll find an article that provides the scoop on this great new tool.
It's nice to come across a product that works a lot like we do.

nüvi 500 GPS: The Best of Both Worlds from Garmin
Whether you are driving, hiking, biking or boating the Garmin nüvi 500 switches modes to keep up with your busy life style. This portable hybrid combines the advanced navigation features and large, color display found in automotive units with the durability of an outdoor handheld. Sleek and slim, you can slip the nüvi 500 into your pocket, backpack or mount it on your dash or windshield with the dashboard disk or vehicle suction cup mount which are included.
When used in your vehicle the units ask you two simple questions: Where to? and View Map. Touch the color screen to easily look up addresses and services and get voice-prompted, turn-by-turn directions to your destination. It comes preloaded with Garmin’s detailed City Navigator® NT street maps. It also includes millions of points of interest. If you're lost, use the Where Am I? emergency locator to view your exact latitude and longitude coordinates, the nearest address and intersection, and the closest hospitals, police stations and fuel stations.
The nüvi 500 also includes preloaded U.S. topographic maps for navigating off road and accepts optional mapping available from Garmin through Ben Meadow for all your outdoor activities.
Finally when boating the waterproof nüvi 500 allows you to plug in microSD cards such as BlueChart to navigate through unfamiliar waters. Again this and other software programs from Garmin are available through Ben Meadows.

Trees Are the Answer: A New Blog from The Society of American Foresters
The Society of American Foresters (SAF) has recently launched its new blog, Trees Are the Answer. Officials with the SAF are hoping the blog will serve as a forum that SAF members can use to share their experiences promoting forestry to the public.
Considering the amount and variety of public outreach programs that State SAF societies, divisions and local chapters participate in on an annual bases there should be plenty to talk about.
