We recently announced this year’s winners of the Ben Meadows Natural Resource Scholarships. Our 2009 scholarship recipient for leadership is Melissa Stephens who attends West Virginia University. Our academic scholarship was awarded to Mike Simmons at the University of New Hampshire. Both winners have very impressive backgrounds that clearly demonstrate a devotion to the stewardship of our natural resources. You can click here to find out more about these outstanding students.
This scholarship program is special to all of us on the Ben Team. Not only is it an opportunity to work with the Society of American Foresters (who administer the scholarships) but it’s our chance to look toward the future. After all, considering the next generation of Outdoor Pros is crucial in a time when academic interest in preservation is waning. According to the Association of American Colleges and Universities there are 2,618 accredited four-year colleges and universities in the United States. Only 66 of these colleges and universities have schools of forestry. And that’s just one example of the fact that a very small percentage of our schools are devoted to natural resource studies.
But that's not the only reason we're so interested in tomorrow's leaders. Beyond preserving our natural habitat and the economic potential associated with those pursuits; it’s important that we maintain bumper crops of newbies willing to do our grunt work. As we’ve said in the past; eventually you’re going to need someone to help with the heavy lifting. So if you know anyone who would benefit from these scholarships please let them know. Spread the word about this and other programs. There are going to be plenty of seasons ahead when it’ll be nice to send an eager, young recruit trudging through the mud while you supervise from the truck.

Pandemic Flu Preparedness Plan For Federal Wildland Fire Agencies
The US Forest Service has posted the Avian and Pandemic Influenza Response and Preparedness Plan for Federal Wildland Fire Agencies. The plan presents current information regarding the participation of wildland fire personnel during outbreaks of flu. It highlights the need for wildland firefighters in a pandemic to provide assistance where needed; even in an non-firefighting role. Recommendations for firefighters' participation include setting up emergency responder base camps, organizing public food distribution or supporting medical personal.
The plan also provides information on the protection of wildland firefighters during pandemic influenza incidents. It also outlines precautions if there is an outbreak of influenza in wildland fire camps.
