Stepping Out of the Shallow End of the Pool

Frequently The Natural Resource is the place where we take an opportunity to have some fun splashing around in the shallow end of the pool. Our goal is always to bring you news and information you can use. But often our tongues are planted firmly in our cheeks when we recommend carving turkeys with chainsaws or write that one of our Product Pros was mistaken for Bigfoot.

This time we'd simply like to say, "Thank you."

2009 has been a harsh year for all of us. Everyone on the Ben Team is keenly aware that every product we ship represents your hard-earned dollars. The trust you've placed in us to deliver the gear you need and the service you deserve inspires us to work harder. We want to make sure each and every time you choose Ben Meadows it's clear you've made the right decision. And for every time you've called, faxed, emailed, gone to benmeadows.com or written us we say, "Thank you."

I'd also like to personally express my admiration and gratitude to everyone on the Ben Meadows Team. Thank you for working incredibly hard to deliver on the promises we make to Outdoor Pros all over the world.

We're not exactly certain what 2010 will bring but you can be sure Ben Meadows will have new and improved ways to serve you better. And as far as The Natural Resource is concerned, you can pretty much count on us to continue to take a dip in the shallow end of the pool every now and again— just like we always have.

P.S. Bryan from Arkansas is the winner of last month's Bendana giveaway. We hope Bryan will keep in touch. We'd like to know what he decides to do with 25 of the most sought-after hankies in recent history.

NEW Munsell Soil Charts PLUS FREE RADIOS!

All About the New Munsell Soil Color Charts

The new 2009 revision of the Munsell Soil Color Charts is available from Ben Meadows. This new revision of the soil book contains all of the colors that have been available in the past plus additional pages.

Among the new additions Munsell has added high value, low chroma “White Page”. This page is used for describing carbonate, silica, gypsum, and soluble salt precipitates and evaporates common to arid and semi-arid environments and very light colored parent materials, such as diatomaceous earth and volcanic ash. The page shows half steps from 8.5 to 9.5 in value with chromas of 1 and 2 for N, 7.5 YR, 10YR and 2.5Y. You'll also find new pages that feature:

  • 10Y and 5GY Soil Chart for glauconitic soils
  • 5R Soil Chart for Australia and Southeast Asia
  • 7.5R Soil Chart for tropical and semi-tropical soils

It's important to note that since all of the color charts are going to be included in the new updated version the supplemental pages of the past will no longer be available for purchase.

Based on customer needs, the new version of the Munsell Soil Color Charts has improved on the ability to wash the pages of the chart through the use of a new design and water resistant materials. This will also lead to better performance in the field, under damp or wet conditions. Color chips are now flush with the paper of each page, eliminating the edges and extending the life of color chips because they can’t be wiped away with the dirt and debris.

It has been some time since there has been any change to the Munsell Soil Color Chart. The consensus among Outdoor Pros responsible for soil identification and monitoring is that this new version is well worth the wait. You can find out about this new version here.

The Natural Resource Editor's Challenge!

Last month we asked this question:

Mudders Boot Supports copy nature to help you overcome sinking and suction when walking in mud. What creature inspired the design of this product?

Michael from Idaho knew that Mudders Boot Supports were modeled after the feet of the Great Blue Heron.

We're sending Michael a PMI Kershaw 5-in-1 Carabiner Tool!

Take a look at our latest catalog or use our Web site (www.benmeadows.com) for help with this month's challenge. Don't have a catalog? You can get a free copy by clicking here. Now here's the question:

It wouldn't be a December issue of The Natural Resource without a reference to snowshoes. We offer our new Denali Classic Snowshoes in two colors. What are these colors?

If you know, send us the correct answer along with your name and how to contact you. Send us the right answer and you'll be entered into a drawing. The winner will receive a PMI Kershaw 5-in-1 Carabiner Tool (a $60 value)!

Send your answers to: editor@benmeadows.com
