Piston Sampler Takes Undisturbed Samples from as Deep as 16.5' (5m) Below Water Table
Use this Set for sampling less cohesive soil layers below the water table and sediment from ditches, rivers or channel bottoms.
The Piston Sampler body is made from a thin-walled stainless steel tube (6) with an open-ended bottom. The piston rod (3) moves through a welded lid (4) at the top of the sampler. When the piston rod is hoisted by the rope connected to the eye (2), a vacuum is created in the tube below the piston (7). The overpressure created in the upper part of the tube is balanced with the surroundings through the outflow openings (5) in the lid.
In order to use the sampler at any desired depth, the tube is equipped with a bayonet connection (1) to which the extension rods and handle can be quickly connected. To permit free passage to the piston rod, this connection part is welded on the outside of the tube.
Sample dia.: 1-1⁄2" (4cm). Tube is 1-3⁄5" O.D. x 1-1⁄2" I.D. (40 x 38mm). Auger holes must be at least 2-1⁄2" (65mm) for the piston to fit. The Piston Sampler can only be used below groundwater or in sludge type material. The combination Edelman Auger (No. 290018) must be used to dig a hole to the groundwater. 200cm Sampler.
