Comments about Fire Broom Rake, Wood Handle:

Except for a leaf blower, this tool is the fastest and easiest way to clear fire breaks by hand in oak-hickory leaf litter. In areas with a lot of briars, vines or brush, you will need someone with a fire rake or brush hook ahead of you, making the leaf rake more effective. The sweeping action is easier and faster on the back than a shovel for fireline building in hardwood leaves. The heavy, round reinforced tines do not bend all up under heavy use, like some of the flimsy leaf rakes that I see on some of the big box store shelves.

The rake can also be used for "burning out" firelines by grabbing burning leaves with the tines and spreading them along. A 3/4 inch wooden or metal handle will also fit on a backfire fussee.

When patrolling a mowed fire break in hardwood leaf litter, this is my favorite tool/ rake. You can sweep the burning embers and smoldering leaves back into the burned edge, widening the fire break.

For brushy areas, carry a Sandvik tool on a belt holster with you.

The older rakes are rebuildable like new, using new bolts, nuts and broom handles. The tines can be unassembled, placed in order, and put together again after painting. Sand the wooden handle and coat with linseed oil to make it last.

I have several on these that I have had for years and recently got 4 more from Ben Meadows.
